The AI Intelligence Loop: How audience intelligence becomes AI visibility strategy
Audience intelligence research gives you insight on what your audience is actually saying — the gritty language, their frustrations, the 'help me decide!' questions they're asking in communities where they won't be retargeted by Meta ads. It's the most honest data available, and the scale is much larger than the focus group structure from 2019.
But here's the thing — even if a brand is going above and beyond with this level of research today, it's typically treated as a one-time analysis. They run the audit, get the insights and then plug the learnings into the strategy. But at the risk of sounding cliche, the world is moving faster than ever. I ran through my audience intelligence process for the baseline of a new client in February, to inform the strategy. Then, as we were finalizing the first month of content upcoming in April, I did a refresh to make sure there were no other patterns emerging and guess what — one of the topics had a meaningful increase in mentions over that 30 days, so we increased the percentage of representation in the upcoming posts. Because we don't want to say what we think our audience wants to hear, we want to say what they NEED and are ASKING to hear.
The AI Intelligence Loop is the system that facilitates this. It's not a one-time discovery phase or a standalone AI visibility strategy. It's a four-step cycle that connects what your audience is actually saying to how your brand shows up when they go looking for answers — especially important for the growing number of customers who ask AI instead of going to Google.
What makes it a loop and not a process
Most marketing processes are linear. 1) Research 2) Build strategy 3) Create content and publish and 4) Measure results. The loop structure is different because the last step feeds back into the first. AI visibility monitoring surfaces the gaps that exist for your brand — the questions going unanswered in your category, competitors being recommended instead of you, brand descriptions AI creates from internet-wide information that doesn't match what your marketing department is including in messaging. Those gaps become the inputs for the next round of audience intelligence research. The strategy gets more effective every time the loop runs because every cycle is informed by evidence from the previous one, not assumptions about what might work next. That compounding effect is what separates brands that build sustainable AI visibility from brands that chase it. What your audience ACTUALLY needs
The first step is the research phase, kind of like discovery x 1,000. We analyze real conversations your target audience is having — not surveys or focus groups. Instead it's community forums, review platforms, the BTS conversations people have when they just want help, an answer, or to vent. This research surfaces three things that most brand strategy is missing: the exact language your audience uses to describe their problems, the specific questions they're asking that nobody is answering well, and the gaps between what you and your competitors are saying and what the audience actually needs to hear.
We analyze real conversations your target audience is having — not surveys or focus groups. Instead it's community forums, review platforms, the BTS conversations people have when they just want help, an answer, or to vent.
The output isn't a list of pillar themes. It's quotes from the audience — along with percentages of how often they occur — that line up to patterned topics that are the exact thing your brand should address. This output might seem like a total pivot for some marketing strategies, but that's because it's no longer best practice and status-quo marketing, it's REAL. You're connecting with the target audience on their level — FINALLY!
Step 2: Strategic Translation
The human layer AI can't replace
Research gives you data, and a strategist turns data into direction. It pains me that there is a strategist gap across agencies and companies right now because we've been in well-running content marketing machines that needed execution, execution, execution. But to successfully translate audience intelligence into messaging frameworks, content priorities and positioning, there needs to be a living, breathing strategist at launch, and then monthly or quarterly to keep the loop going.
Strategic translation answers the questions the research raises AND merges it with the strategy (SEO + AI visibility):
Which gaps are worth owning?
What content would actually close the gap between what the audience is asking and what the brand is saying — and how do we do that if we're in a regulated industry?
How do we sequence the work so the highest-priority opportunities get addressed first?
To meet the current landscape of SEO and AI visibility, the content has to be structured to answer specific questions in a format that AI systems can extract and cite. It's a delicate balance of writing for both human readers and robots at the same time — aren't we so lucky to be alive in this timeline!
Step 3: Content Activation
Building the citation footprint
Content isn't just published to your website and social channels (and maybe YouTube if you've been on it). It now needs to go across the channels where the audience actually lives, and where the LLMs like to cite.
Reddit is worth calling out specifically here. While it’s been quietly owning Google results, it’s loudly becoming the most heavily cited source across major AI platforms — appearing in a significant percentage of citations on Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT. Authentic participation in relevant communities doesn't just build brand credibility with human audiences, it builds the signal that AI systems use to verify brand authority. But it isn't easy to do, AT ALL.
Step 4: AI Visibility
Show up where customers are actually searching
The final step is monitoring and optimization — tracking how the brand shows up across AI platforms, what's being cited, what competitors are being recommended instead and where the gaps still exist. It's running a continuous AI visibility audit to measure whether the work from Steps 1-3 is working and to surface the specific inputs for the next round of audience intelligence research.
This is what closes the loop and creates the ongoing impact. The monitoring data tells you which questions AI is still routing to competitors, which brand descriptions don't match what you're trying to claim and which content gaps haven't been filled yet. And THAT becomes the brief for the next cycle.
What the loop looks like in practice
The Libbey audit I recently published is a clear example of what the loop surfaces when you run it on a brand that hasn't been running one. Audience intelligence research across nearly 1,000 conversations in the categories AI says Libbey wins — budget glassware, durable everyday glass, first apartment setup, wedding registry — returned zero organic mentions. Not low mention rates...zilch, nada, nothin'.
The brand identity AI served for Libbey came entirely from sources like reviews on product listings and foodservice associations (their B2B audience).
What makes it even more confusing is if a marketer were to simply go to a tool like SEMrush and get an 'AI Visibility' score, they'd have a false positive. Libbey is in line with their competitors, but AI was sharing a message that the brand was not including as their marketing: budget and durable regardless of what the premium product copy said. The loop would have surfaced this before the product launch and content investment cycle, not after. More importantly, it would have identified the specific gap the brand could own instead. When you implement this sort of ongoing input into a strategy, it compounds in the best way possible.

The loop is relevant for any brand or agency that is investing in content and wants to know whether that investment is building the right signal — not just ranking on the right keywords, but being cited when buyers ask AI for recommendations in their category.
